Renovation or New Construction: New Construction/Expansion
Completion Date:  January 2003

Project Details: The new 23-gate, 660,000 square-foot Terminal E at George Bush Intercontinental Airport opened in January 2003 after a 30-month, $17.5 million interiors construction project.

The U-shaped, double pier expansion is housed in a three-story steel frame structure. The terminal’s interior centerpiece is the four-story “ellipse” which includes an atrium open from the concourse level to the roof. A video ring is also installed around the U-shape, with 80 plasma monitors displaying flight information.

A Cambridge Architectural LandscapeInteriors mesh system was specified and includes panelized metal fabric screens which hang from an exposed elliptical steel truss in front of store windows on each level. LandscapeInteriors systems broadly feature metal fabric within an expansive interior.

Approximately 16,000 square feet of Cambridge’s Ridge metal fabric pattern and Tableau tension attachment hardware creates the LandscapeInteriors mesh system, which features 40% open area.

The two wings of the U-shaped structure feature departure gates on the second floor and arrival gates on the third. Terminal E more than doubled Continental’s international gate cpacity, making it capable of processing 4,000 passengers per hour.
