Project Details: Cambridge’s Plaza metal fabric pattern, supported by Panel attachment hardware, adorns the interior walls of the elevator cabs at the new Rental Car Center at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
As part of the airport’s $695 million expansion program, the new Rental Car Center was constructed to house a number of car rental companies, all under one roof. Selected for aesthetics and durability, Cambridge’s rigid metal fabric performs exceedingly well in airport elevators, which are extreme high-traffic areas.  Due to their texture and depth, the metal fabric patterns also mask dents or scratches. “Once the material is installed, it is virtually maintenance and hassle free,” explains David Merriman, manager, marketing and business development for Cambridge Architectural. “This is particularly important in high-traffic areas like airports because it can withstand impact, hide scratches and it is easy to clean.” The material is woven exactly like a fine fabric, yet it is practically indestructible, providing an ideal panel solution. “There are elevators throughout the US that are over 20 years old that have Cambridge’s original material still in place,” continues Merriman. “The material continues to exhibit the same qualities as it did when it was first installed and demonstrates our product’s ability to withstand even the most high-traffic areas.” Spillis Candela DMJM, Miami, FL, served as the project architect.  The Plaza metal fabric features rigid, closed weaves that are affixed to substrates and installed in elevator cabs or as wall, floor, ceiling and façade panels. Cambridge’s Panel attachment system was used to install the Plaza product.  The metal fabric is first attached to a substrate such as MDF, and Z-clips join the panels to the substructure. A wide range of rigid and flexible metal fabric patterns in various scales and finishes combined with assorted installation and attachment system options, offer an opportunity to achieve custom aesthetics, functionality and economy all in one design. Using Cambridge Architectural mesh systems can also lead to significant cost savings over alternative panelized systems.
